Quito: Day 1

After a hearty breakfast, I felt it was time to hit the pavement and see the city. My first stop was the Plaza Grande to sit and take in the heart of the historic center. I was approached and got a shoe shine. After enough sitting, I made my way to Church De el Sagrario built from 1699-1706. A small church with some excellent detailed and the usual religious paintings.
I walked further down the street to the La Compańia de Jesus. This is their main church. It took over 160 years to build. A beautiful Baroque facade led to a cavernous church with magnificent ceiling detail.

History:
La Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús (English: The Church of the Society of Jesus, known colloquially as La Compañía) is a Jesuit church in the historic center of Quito, Ecuador. It is among the best-known churches in Quito because of its large central nave, which is profusely decorated with gold leaf, gilded plaster and wood carvings. Inspired by two Roman Jesuit churches — the Chiesa del Gesù and the Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola — La Compañía is one of the most significant works of Spanish Baroque architecture in South America.

After the visit, I stopped to pick up some water and relax in San Francisco Plaza.
